Guest Blog: Vegan Food Guide - Amsterdam
Updated: Mar 25, 2019
'Going vegan' was predicted to be the biggest food trend of 2018 and it is said to continue to grow in 2019. Every time we went for breakfast, lunch, or dinner in Amsterdam we saw more and more vegan dishes on the menu. As two non-vegans this made us very curious and eager to try more vegan food.
It wasn’t easy for us to find a website that provided a clear overview of cool hotspots with vegan food on their menu, thus we started our own journey and Vegan Food Amsterdam was born! Our mission: we hope to inspire anyone and everyone to try vegan food regardless of how you label your diet.
Vegan food - Amsterdam airport
During our holiday we visited Tulum, Mexico. We read on many food blogs that Tulum had great vegan food. During our stay, we enjoyed a lot of great vegan meals at different places one of them being Charly’s Vegan Tacos a definite must try if you are in Tulum!
During the long flight from Cancun Airport to Amsterdam, we started craving a good vegan meal. A great spot to check out for vegan food in the airport is LEON Naturally Fast Food. They had fresh dishes with great local products, from airy yogurt full of fruit and honey to delicious meals with a Mediterranean twist, they also had gluten free options. The menu was created to ensure that everyone has vegan options to pick from whether you are a relaxed book lover or fanatic football player. Our vegan breakfast at LEON was great!
Vegan grocery shopping
Our next step was to buy some groceries for the coming week. It is true that seasonal vegan foods are expensive, this is because they require more time, energy and other resources to plant. Here are some basic vegan shopping tips when grocery shopping:
Meat alternatives such as the brand Vivera are acceptable.
Shop sale items: like every other supermarket in Amsterdam, vegan supermarkets also have deals. P.S. the supermarket Vegabond often has price reductions.
Cut down on processed foods: the reason why processed foods are expensive is because of all the industrial processes involved. Focus more on whole and organic vegan foods such as fruits and vegetables. Also go for beans, peas, nuts and kale.
Now that you are prepared to go shopping for some vegan groceries read on for a shortlist of our favourite vegan supermarkets in Amsterdam.

The supermarket is also at the forefront of sustainability as they have an entire plastic-free aisle where all groceries are packed in bio-degradable packaging. The Ekoplaza also has an online store where you can make orders for any organic products at your convenience.
